INTO

INSTITUTIONAL

Presentation

The National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics Jamil Haddad (INTO), located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, under direct administration of the Ministry of Health, is responsible for serving exclusively patients from the public healthcare system (SUS). INTO is a reference for highly complex orthopedic surgical procedures in the country.

INTO is currently the only Brazilian hospital to integrate the International Society of Orthopedic Centers (ISOC), which congregates the 24 best orthopedic centers in the world.

The institute has been ranked among the 50 best orthopedic centers in the world for four consecutive years, by the Newsweek magazine (ranked by the German company STATISTA).

INTO’s headquarters

The institution, originally named Hospital of Traumato Orthopedics – HTO, was inaugurated in 1973 and received the status of an institute in 1994, after being recognized as a national reference not only in assistance, but also in teaching, research, prevention, and in the elaboration of public policies in Orthopedics, Traumatology and Rehabilitation, being renamed as National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics - INTO. In 2011, INTO moved to a new headquarters, five times bigger and with an operational capacity three times bigger than the former one, located at Avenida Brasil 500,

The Institute stands out not only in the clinical and surgical fields, but also in the areas of teaching and research with its 6 laboratories, including the Neuromuscular Research Lab (PNEURO) and the Effort Physiology Lab (LAFES), which aim to boost the development of studies in Exercise Physiology and Sports Medicine.

Another INTO’s highlight is the Multi tissue Bank, inaugurated in 1989, responsible for collecting, processing, storing and distributing bones, tendons, and menisci for use in transplant surgeries, as well as cornea and skin. INTO maintains teams prepared to collect tissues 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The whole process is free of charge for both the donor's family and the recipient.

In the teaching area, INTO provides medical residency programs in Orthopedics and Traumatology, Hand Surgery, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Services and Physiotherapy. It also offers specialization programs in multidisciplinary fields, in addition to having a Professional Master’s degree course (stricto sensu) in Applied Sciences to the Musculoskeletal System.

HEMOINTO, INTO’s own blood bank, responsible for maintaining the blood stocks for performing complex orthopedic surgeries, inaugurated in August 2014, reduced surgery suspension rates, through the possibility of autologous donations and systematic blood donation campaigns.

INTO’s Home Care unit, a reference since 2005, reduces hospital stay and increases bed turnover, representing more long-term efficiency. It also personalizes care and shows empathy, which ultimately increases patient adherence to treatment.

The institute's headquarters cover an area of almost 70,000 square meters in a privileged location in the port area, recently revitalized for hosting major events in the city.

INTO's outpatient clinic has 40 offices for orthopedic and multidisciplinary care, where more than 200.000 consultations are carried out per year. The waiting area is a welcoming, air-conditioned, spacious, and computerized environment, created to guarantee comfort for patients and their families.

The rehabilitation unit, in an area of two thousand square meters, including a pool for hydrotherapy treatments, has an estimated capacity of 60,000 appointments per year. At the rehab unit there is a team of physiatrists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and social workers working together to recover patients, giving them back movement and quality of life.

The complex also houses a Day Hospital, with 3 operating rooms and 18 post-operative beds, intended for patients undergoing simpler and faster procedures, who can be discharged on the same day.

INTO's Surgical Center has 21 operating rooms, two of which equipped with live satellite transmission equipment. This technology is used in training and continuous education for health professionals.

The inpatient unit has 255 beds distributed over three floors, 16 adult intensive care beds, 4 pediatric intensive care beds, 7 semi-intensive therapy beds, and 21 post-operative beds.

The year 2020 was severely impacted by the COVID 19 pandemics, as elective surgeries were suspended, following guidance from the health authorities and INTO took the role of attending all the orthopedic trauma cases in the State of Rio de Janeiro, in order to free up beds in general and emergency hospitals, so that they could treat the severe cases of COVID.
